2017

Japanese Gold Lacquer Boxes

November 18- December 22 2017 Erik Thomsen Gallery is proud to announce its next exhibition of Japanese gold-lacquer boxes, including over 30 works from the 17th century to the present day. The displat will focus on items suited to the cultural needs and pastimes of traditional Japans courtly and military elites: suzuribako (boxes for writing utensils), natsume (caddies for powdered matcha green tea), kobako (miniature containers for tiny silvers of imported incense wood), and tebako ("hand boxes", for ladies' accessories), all of them with meticulous decoration in the full range of gold and silver maki-e("a sprinkled-picture) techniques unique to Japan. Opening Reception Thursday November 16 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm  Monday-Friday 10am - 5pm  Saturday, December 2, 10am - 5pm

We are delighted to announce that Erik Thomsen Gallery has been selected for the New York debut of TEFAF, opening this weekend at the Park Avenue Armory.

Founded in 1988, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) has evolved into the most respected of all art and antique fairs. Headquartered in Maastricht, it's comprehensive displays of outstanding works presented by top dealers from around the world offer "One-stop shopping for the cultural elite."

To mark this unique event, our stand No. 47 will be anchored by a pair of Japanese six-panel folding screens depicting a grand, sweeping composition of blossoming cherry trees by a rushing stream, richly embellished with gold, silver, and vibrant mineral pigments.
